How to choose the right Plastic Surgeon

Making the decision to undergo plastic surgery, whether cosmetic or reconstructive is a serious decision and choosing the right surgeon is a vital part, not only for individual patient satisfaction but also for patient safety.

Plastic surgery is no longer a taboo subject, in fact, one in ten Australians will or have undergone some form of plastic surgery. It’s important to us that patients have a safe and positive plastic surgery experience. Unfortunately, although the internet is a great resource some information can be misleading and incorrect, therefore we have created a checklist of important things to help guide you in the right direction when choosing the surgeon that’s right for you.

Talk to your GP

First of all, talk to your GP. They will be able to provide you with a referral to a qualified plastic surgeon that is right for your needs. They will also most likely have feedback on what skills they have in specific areas and what their reputation is.

Check your surgeon’s credentials and experiencechoosing a plastic surgeon

There are many factors to consider when choosing a plastic surgeon. One of the most important is to make sure that the surgeon is qualified and has the experience necessary to perform the surgery you are seeking.

Ask to see their qualifications. Plastic Surgeons operating in Australia should be part of;

  • FRACS –¬†Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
  • AHPRA – Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. All surgeons performing plastic surgery in Australia must be registered AHPRA. You can check this on the AHPRA website
  • They must also hold a current Medicare provider number.

Talk to your friends

Your friends and family can be a great resource. It’s likely that you know at least one person who has undergone plastic surgery. Ask them about their experience and if they were happy with the surgeon they chose.

It’s still important to do your own research. Just because they were right for them doesn’t mean they are the right choice for you, however, it can be a great starting point.

Check reviews online

There are many websites where you can read reviews of surgeons. It’s important to do your research and read reviews from past patients. This can give you a good indication of the quality of care you can expect. Make sure to only read independent reviews, not ones that are paid for by the surgeon.

Look for a surgeon that specialises in the surgery you are seeking

Plastic surgeons don’t necessarily have to specialise in all areas of plastic surgery, they may choose to focus their skills on a specific area. It’s important to find a surgeon who has experience in the area you are seeking surgery. For example, if you are wanting a breast augmentation then choosing a plastic surgeon who specialises in breast surgery is the best choice.

Make an appointment for a consultation

Once you have narrowed down your choices it’s important to make an appointment for a consultation. During this consult, the surgeon will give you an examination and discuss your options with you. You should talk to your surgeon about;

  • The outcome you desire
  • What they think is the right surgery for you
  • The risks and potential complications of the procedure
  • What your recovery will be like after surgery
  • And any other questions you may have.

During your consult, you can also ask the surgeon to show you before and after photos of past patients. This is a great way to see what the procedure can do for you.

We suggest taking a friend or family member with you for your first consult, not only for moral support but to also help your process the information.

It’s important to remember that if you are not comfortable with the surgeon, that’s ok and you shouldn’t hesitate to seek a second opinion. In fact, we recommend you have a few consults with different surgeons so you know you have options.

Take your time

It’s important to take your time when choosing a plastic surgeon. Do not feel rushed into making a decision that you may regret later on. Do your research, ask around and most importantly, trust your gut feeling. If something doesn’t feel right, then it probably isn’t. When choosing a plastic surgeon, it’s important to look for someone with the right qualifications and experience. You should also ask your friends and family for recommendations. Make sure to read reviews online before making an appointment for a consultation. Take your time to make the best decision for you. If you’re not comfortable with the surgeon, seek a second

We hope that this information has been helpful and that you feel more confident in choosing the right plastic surgeon for you.
